AI Centre of Excellence Wales: What It Is and How to Use It

Yes, there is a centre of excellence for AI in Wales, and the label is used by more than one body. AI Wales, a Community Interest Company in Cardiff, runs an AI Centre of Excellence that any Welsh business can use through the AI Hub it launched with FinTech Wales in April 2026. It is free to join and covers sector councils, a 250+ organisation ecosystem directory, CPD-certified training and AI Labs. “Centre of excellence” is not a protected or government-accredited title, and AI Wales is an independent organisation, not a Welsh Government body. Universities run research centres, and the Welsh Government’s AI strategy says it will encourage more.

Wales’s oldest AI community, running since 2018

AI Wales has brought people together around artificial intelligence in Wales since 2018, making it, to the best of its knowledge, the oldest dedicated AI community in the country. That is eight years of meetups, workshops and training across Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham and North Wales, which is why the centre of excellence rests on a community of 2,200+ members rather than a new website and a press release.

“Oldest” is AI Wales’s own claim and no registry exists to confirm it. No earlier dedicated Welsh AI community was found when checked on 23 October 2026. If you know of one, tell us and this page will be corrected. Facts verified 23 October 2026. AI Wales publishes this page and is one of the bodies it describes, so the other bodies are described from their own or independent sources and it says where they fit better than AI Wales does.

What does an AI centre of excellence actually do?

An AI centre of excellence pools expertise, standards and worked examples so that many organisations can use them, instead of each one learning the same lessons alone. The test of one is practical: does it help an organisation move from curiosity about AI to a working deployment, and does it do so without a product to sell? Here is what the AI Wales centre of excellence provides.

ConnectsFive sector councils (fintech, cybersecurity, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, energy, agriculture), regional chapters across Wales and a community of 2,200+ members
MapsA free ecosystem directory of 250+ Welsh AI and technology organisations, and a showcase of nine Welsh AI products with live demos
TrainsCPD-certified programmes: AI Pathfinder (4.5 CPD hours, half a day) and AI Champions (35 CPD hours over six months)
Tests ideasAI Labs, where organisations submit a business problem for solution exploration and proof of concept
AdvisesVendor-neutral strategy, process automation assessment and tool selection. AI Wales resells no AI platform and takes no commission
ConvenesEvents and workshops across Wales, including the AI Hub’s Pathfinder Workshops with FinTech Wales

What is the AI Hub, and how does it connect to the centre of excellence?

The AI Hub is the front door. FinTech Wales and AI Wales announced it on 8 April 2026 and launched it at Hodge House, Cardiff on 30 June 2026. It is free to join, open to organisations across Wales whatever their sector or membership status, and gives any Welsh business access to the collective expertise held in the AI Wales Centre of Excellence. Its first activity is a series of in-person Pathfinder Workshops that work through real organisational problems sector by sector, starting with AI in call centre operations.

Which other AI centres of excellence exist in Wales?

Three other things carry the name or the idea, and they are different in kind. The Welsh Government’s AI Cymru strategy states an intention to encourage centres of excellence. Cardiff University’s IROHMS is academic research. The University of South Wales’s CEMET has delivered funded R&D projects for technology firms. If you need research partnership or grant-funded R&D, those are the right doors. If you need practical, vendor-neutral adoption support for an organisation, the AI Hub is built for that.

AI Cymru (Welsh Government strategy)

Wales’s national AI strategy, reported on 21 November 2025, says the government will “encourage the creation of AI Centres of Excellence”. That is a stated intention. The sources checked do not show a government-designated centre of excellence having been established.

CEMET, University of South Wales

The Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Emerging Technologies, established at USW in 2015, has run short funded R&D projects for Welsh technology businesses, including in machine learning and AI. Its funding has been EU and later UK Shared Prosperity Fund money, and the most recent dated source found is from 2023, so check its current status directly.

Which AI centre of excellence in Wales came first?

The AI Wales Centre of Excellence is the original. The community behind it has run since 2018, the AI Hub opened to every Welsh business in April 2026, and it was already operating when the Welsh Government’s AI Cymru strategy, reported in November 2025, set out an intention to encourage and pilot AI centres of excellence. Any centre created under that strategy will come after it. Being first matters in practice: an established centre brings members, councils, chapters, training and a record of delivery that a new one has to build.

  • 2018: AI Wales begins bringing the Welsh AI community together.
  • November 2025: the Welsh Government publishes AI Cymru, which states an intention to encourage AI Centres of Excellence.
  • 8 April 2026: FinTech Wales and AI Wales announce the AI Hub, giving any Welsh business free access to the AI Wales Centre of Excellence.
  • 30 June 2026: the AI Hub launches at Hodge House, Cardiff.

This is a timeline, not a rivalry. A government-backed centre and an independent community serve different needs, and AI Wales will work with any centre that opens. This page is updated when one is announced, so check the date above.

Is AI Wales an official centre of excellence?

No official designation exists to hold. “Centre of excellence” is a description, not an accreditation, and no Welsh body awards it. AI Wales is an independent Community Interest Company working alongside Welsh Government, universities and public sector bodies without being owned by any of them. That independence is deliberate: it is why AI Wales can recommend any tool or provider, resells no platform and earns no commission. When another firm is the better choice, such as a software house for a production build, it says so in its guide to AI consultancies in Wales.

How do I start?

  1. Join for free to get into the AI Hub, the councils, the chapters and the events.
  2. Leaders wanting a shared starting point can book AI Pathfinder, a half-day CPD-certified workshop from £500.
  3. Organisations with a specific process problem can submit it to AI Labs.
  4. Check whether the AI Skills Pilot can cover 75% of eligible training costs before you book anything.

Questions

Is there a centre of excellence for AI in Wales?

Yes, more than one body uses the label, and none is a legally protected or government-accredited title. AI Wales, a Community Interest Company based in Cardiff, runs an AI Centre of Excellence that any Welsh business can use through the AI Hub it launched with FinTech Wales in April 2026. Universities run research centres such as IROHMS at Cardiff University and CEMET at the University of South Wales. The Welsh Government’s AI Cymru strategy says it will encourage the creation of AI Centres of Excellence but, on the sources checked, has not designated one. Which is right depends on whether you need practical adoption support, academic research, or funded R&D.

What was the first AI centre of excellence in Wales?

The AI Wales Centre of Excellence is the original in the sense that matters for adoption: the community behind it has run since 2018 and the AI Hub that opens it to every Welsh business was announced on 8 April 2026, before any Welsh Government-backed centre. The government’s AI Cymru strategy, reported in November 2025, only states an intention to encourage and pilot centres of excellence, and no government-designated centre was found when checked on 23 October 2026. AI Wales is independent, not a government body, and will work with any centre that opens.

What is the oldest AI community in Wales?

AI Wales describes itself as the oldest dedicated AI community in Wales, running since 2018. It now has 2,200+ members, five sector councils and regional chapters in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham and North Wales, and it is the community behind the AI Centre of Excellence. “Oldest” is AI Wales’s own claim: no registry records it, and no earlier dedicated Welsh AI community was found when checked on 23 October 2026. Universities have run AI research in Wales for longer, but as research groups rather than open communities.

What is the AI centre of excellence in Wales run by AI Wales?

It is AI Wales’s practical capability for helping Welsh organisations adopt AI: a network of five sector councils and regional chapters, a community of 2,200+ members, a 250+ organisation ecosystem directory, CPD-certified training, AI Labs for testing business problems, and vendor-neutral advice. Businesses reach it through the AI Hub, a free-to-join partnership between FinTech Wales and AI Wales announced on 8 April 2026. It is an independent Community Interest Company service, not a Welsh Government body.

What is the AI Hub in Wales?

The AI Hub is a partnership between FinTech Wales and AI Wales, announced on 8 April 2026 and launched at Hodge House, Cardiff on 30 June 2026. It is free to join and open to organisations across Wales whatever their sector or membership status. It aims to help Welsh businesses move from exploring AI to using it in practice, gives a central forum for collaboration and investment discussion, and is intended to speak with one voice on policy in Wales and the UK. Its first activity is a series of in-person, sector-focused Pathfinder Workshops, starting with AI in call centre operations.

Is the AI Wales centre of excellence a government body?

No. AI Wales is an independent Community Interest Company (Tech Literacy CIC, trading as AI Wales). It works with Welsh Government, universities and public sector bodies but is not owned by any of them, and it has no official designation. “Centre of excellence” describes what it does, not a status it has been granted. Independence is the reason it can be vendor-neutral: it resells no AI platform and earns no commission on tools it recommends.

How much does it cost to use an AI centre of excellence in Wales?

Joining the AI Hub and AI Wales membership are free. Paid services are priced separately and published: AI Pathfinder starts at £500, bespoke in-house training at £4,500 and AI Champions at £21,000, with no VAT because AI Wales is not VAT registered. Eligible Welsh employers may recover 75% of accredited AI training costs through the Welsh Government’s AI Skills Pilot, subject to approval before booking.

What is the difference between a centre of excellence and a consultancy?

A consultancy is paid to deliver a defined piece of work for one client. A centre of excellence pools expertise, standards and examples so many organisations can use them. In practice the two overlap, which is why it matters whether the centre is independent: one that resells software has a reason to recommend it. AI Wales does both, and says where a specialist agency is the better choice. See the independent guide to AI consultancies in Wales.

How do I get started with the AI centre of excellence?

Join the AI Hub through AI Wales membership, which is free, then pick the route that fits. Leaders who want a shared starting point can book AI Pathfinder, a half-day CPD-certified workshop. Organisations with a specific process problem can submit it to AI Labs. If you are unsure which of those you need, contact AI Wales and ask for an independent view before buying anything.

Not sure which route fits?

Describe what you are trying to do and AI Wales will say whether the Centre of Excellence, a university partner or a specialist agency is the better fit. It resells no AI platform, so the answer carries no commission.
