AI Funding in Wales

Wales has a strong funding ecosystem for AI businesses — from Welsh Government innovation grants to Innovate UK and private investment. AI Wales maps the routes and helps members navigate them.

Welsh Government support

The Welsh Government offers several programmes relevant to AI businesses, including Innovation for All, Smart Living programme grants, and Business Wales Digital consultancy. AI Wales members get introductions to the right programmes for their stage.

Funding for AI training

The Welsh Government Flexible Skills Programme runs an AI Skills Pilot that contributes 75% of eligible AI training costs, up from the programme's standard 50%. The pilot runs until the end of March 2027, is capped at a maximum contribution of £50,000 per application, is discretionary, and is paid in arrears once training is complete. Training must be accredited or delivered to a recognised industry standard, and you may choose any certified provider. Apply through a Business Wales Expression of Interest before booking. Innovate UK

Innovate UK runs regular funding competitions relevant to AI — including Smart Grants, Launchpad programmes covering Wales, and sector-specific challenges in health, defence, and agriculture. AI Wales monitors open competitions and alerts relevant members.

Investment community

Wales has a growing angel and VC network. AI Wales connects early-stage AI companies with investor partners appropriate to their sector and stage.
